Tuesday afternoon, January 12th, the worst earthquake in 200 years struck less than ten miles from the Caribbean city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This disaster was brought to the attention of the members of Student Councils on the South Campus. These students expressed the desire to help the people of Haiti. The Student Council members organized a collection drive for Haiti. The combined efforts of Hawthorn Middle South, Aspen, Elementary South and the Goddard Preschool are pleased to announce that their students raised $6,742.54 for Haiti Relief. We thank all those who supported their efforts for Haiti.

Support the Earthquake Recovery Efforts in Haiti

On January 12, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti just outside the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The devastation – in lives lost, property destroyed, and families displaced – is immense. At the request of President Obama, we are partnering to help the Haitian people reclaim their country and rebuild their lives. Our immediate priority is to save lives. The critical needs in Haiti are great, but they are also simple: food, water, shelter, and first-aid supplies. The best way concerned citizens can help is to donate funds that will go directly to supplying these material needs. Through the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, we will work to provide immediate relief and long-term support to earthquake survivors. We will channel the collective goodwill around the globe to help the people of Haiti rebuild their cities, their neighborhoods, and their families. We ask each of you to give what you can to help ensure the people of Haiti can build back stronger and better than ever.

The Student Council at Aspen School is supporting the national effort to raise funds to help the people of Haiti by selling bracelets for $1.00 each. Middle School South started this fundraiser and we said that we would join them in this project. Information will be going home with the Students from Aspen.

Dear Parent(s),

The Student Council at Aspen is sponsoring a fundraiser during the month of December. We are calling our program Pennies For Pooches. We are placing a milk jug in each classroom to collect pennies for Save-A-Pet.

Save-A-Pet is a no kill shelter that is caring for 200 cats and 75 dogs. Because of the problems with the economy right now, the intake of animals has tripled. The shelter has had to let 40% of their staff go to try to keep close to their budget. The vet bills are about $200,000 a month because more animals are coming in with health issues.

Save-A-Pet has had to temporarily shut down their small dog room because they don’t have the staff to walk them. The equipment there is old and needs repair. The dryer has broken down twice in less than a month. The shelter needs volunteer help on many levels because they are so short handed.

The Student Council would appreciate your pennies to help Save-A-Pet.

Thank you,
The Aspen Student Council
