Standards Based Grading - September 22, 2008

By now most of you are familiar with the new standards-based report cards that began last year when your student was in 3rd grade. This reporting system closely parallels the system used by the State of Illinois with the state assessments, more commonly known as the ISAT tests. Your fourth grader will have the same grading system used this year as well. For academic work, this numbered system is described below:

4 - Exceeds Grade Level Standards - the work demonstrates in-depth inferences and/or applications that go beyond what was
taught in class; shows a high level of knowledge, understanding, or skill

3 - Meets Grade Level Standards - the work shows understanding and knowledge that meets expectations for the grade level;
includes both simpler and complex ideas and processes that were explicitly taught in class

2 - Approaches Grade Level Standards - the work shows some knowledge and understanding that meets some expectations for
the grade level; usually simpler ideas and processes explicitly taught are included, but more complex ideas taught may not
be demonstrated

1 - Below Grade Level Standards - the work does not yet meet expectations for the grade level; more exposure and modeling
may be needed to develop the appropriate knowledge and understanding

It should be each student's goal to meet the fourth grade level standards. Generally, only a small percentage of our students exceed the expectations of the teachers. Contact me if you have questions.
