Mrs. Meiners's Classroom Notes

2008-2009 WE ARE OFF TO A GOOD START!!

Please be sure that your child has an extra pair of gym shoes left at school for P.E. We will be going outside as much as possible until November, so watch the weather for chilly mornings.

We have begun the year with team building, fitness tests and soccer. If your child is unable to participate in P.E. due to medical reasons please send in a note and have your child bring it to their P.E. teacher.

Strong Finish with the Olympics!!

Our final unit in 1st and 2nd grade technology is a fact finding mission on the Olympics. Students are learning how to use a search engine from our Educational Links to find interesting information about the Olympics. We began with a picture of the 5 Olympic rings as our selected masterpiece of art. This aligns with Bernstein Artful Learning. Come and look at our really awesome bulletin board full of facts outside the tech room if you are at school! We took a virtual trip to Beijing, China and Vancouver, Canada to see where the upcoming Olympics will be held.

Over the summer please visit the Educational Links site with your child. Give them time to practice keyboarding as well. This will help them with future projects at school.

Olympic Day in P.E.

"All About Me" in March 2008

Students in 1st and 2nd grade technology rotation have been working on a writing project using Kidspiration software entitled "All About Me". There are six topics to write and draw about such as a self portrait, things they like in a heart shape and what they do at school on a chalkboard background. They use pictures and text to tell a story about themselves. Look for these to come home as the students share their work with you.

February Conferences on February 21nd and 22nd, 2008

Just and FYI - I will be in the Technology Lab on Thursday evening if you want to stop by and view your child's work in their technology rotation.

Those of you who want to discuss your child's progress in Physical Education, you will find me in the gym area on Friday morning.

FEBRUARY IS HEART HEALTHY MONTH

    PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Students in grades 1-5 will be participating in our 27th Annual Jump Rope For Heart" event during their Physical Education classes. Teams will take turns rope jumping to get their hearts pumping and maintain a healthy lifestyle. This event takes place Feb. 12-14th. Please visit the American Heart Association web-site for more healthy tips.

Badminton is the name of the game this month. Students are learning how to strike an object (balloon or birdie) with a badminton racquet or foam racquet depending upon the grade level. Emphasis is on maintaining a safe personal space, when swinging a racquet, as well as eye-hand coordination and balance.

    TECHNOLOGY

Each 1st and 2nd grade tech class is creating their own class book entitled "The Creepy Crawly Book", using text and draw. Would you be a slithering worm, a cricket, or a ladybug? Some students are making a cover for the book. Please come and look at the books during conferences later this month.
