Final Newsletter of the Year

Parents and Guardians of Aspen,

The year has flown by, and I can not believe I am writing the June newsletter already. There have been many successes, some struggles, and a lot of growth with all of our Aspen students. We are looking at summer right around the corner, and then all of our students will be advancing to the next grade.

First, I have information about our staff for the next school year. Mrs. Tiffany Treat, 1st grade teacher, will be moving to teach 4th grade. Mrs. Sally Hanson, learning center teacher, will be moving to teach 1st grade. Mrs. Tara Moncada, Townline learning center teacher, will be coming to Aspen as a learning center teacher. Ms. Carly Burda, teaching assistant, will be moving to teach Early Childhood. Nancy McVicker, current secretary at district office, will be our EC/Pre-K secretary joined by Mayra Lanuza, current secretary at Townline. Finally, Gayle Shanahan, current teacher clerk at Elementary North, will be our new teacher clerk. These are the only staff teaching changes we are anticipating. I am excited for the families at Aspen, and I am confident that Mrs. Treat, Mrs. Hanson, Mrs. Moncada, Mrs. McVicker, Mrs. Lanuza, Mrs. Shanahan and Ms. Burda will do a great job in their new positions.

H1N1 (also known as Swine Flu)

Hawthorn Dist. 73 continues to work with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Lake County Health Department to best address any questions and concerns regarding H1N1 (swine flu). Please refer to the District's main webpage at http://www.hawthorn73.org for current information.

Congratulations to Mrs. Hanson and Ms. Landaker

Congratulations to Mrs. Hanson and Ms. Landaker who are winners of grants from US Cellular and DonorsChoose.org. They will be receiving a large number of fiction books for students to enjoy after 3 grants, written by Mrs. Hanson and Ms. Landaker were chosen for full funding.

To see photos of the presentation ceremony please click on the Activity Pictures link to the left.

Thank you US Cellular and DonorsChoose.org for their generosity. And, thank you Mrs. Hanson and Ms. Landaker for taking the time to write the grants for our students.

FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2009

Olympic Day has been cancelled due to flooding on our fields.

The ONLY lunch available to Aspen Elementary School students on Friday, May 29 (grades 1 through 5)
will include:
hot dog and bun
vanilla flavored goldfish
carrot stick snacks
juice, milk or lemonade

Students will use their lunch cards to pay for the lunch, or you can bring in $2.20 cash or your own lunch from home.

No other lunch will be offered that day.

Thank you to all volunteers who had planned to join in the fun.

2008-09 Is Coming to a Close

As hard as it is to concentrate when the weather turns warm and the great outdoors is calling, school is still in session. Please help us keep our students on task by giving them plenty of time to run off their energy outside of classroom time. Recess and PE are great opportunities during the day to blow off some steam, but we all know how hard it is to focus when your legs just want to run. We still have more learning to do so please remind your child that summer will come, but not just yet.

Speaking of exercise, Olympic Day returns to Aspen on Friday, May 29th. We all look forward to this exciting, sporting event- filled day for fun.
